bullet Topic: Theater Job Descriptions
    Posted: 10/22/02 at 1:58pm
Does anyone know a good place to find Job Descriptions for Community Theater? More specifically, our theater has never used a producer position on its shows. It has been suggested that we do.
Got a source? Thanks

In can't provide specific job descriptions, but at my theater (and other I have worked at) the producer is ultimatly responsible for all "non-creative" aspects of the show. The producer keeps track of the bugdet, makes sure the program gets done, makes sure the show is staffed and that the staff is doing it's job, makes sure publicity info goes out, etc. Who does these jobs at your theater?

Ditto for our theater -- producer is sort of the "head organizer," taking care of the nuts-and-bolts details so the director doesn't go nuts trying to do everything and making sure cast and crew have what they need when they need it. Our producers are generally responsible for finding a head of house, someone to do the program, someone to help with props, someone to head set construction, and often does the calling around to track down hard-to-find items or costuming. Some directors like for the producer to also recruit a lighting/sound director and stage manager for the production, but most prefer to choose their own technical team, and will ask the producer to recruit everyone else. Many times, the producer is rarely seen, because they can accomplish pretty much everything on the phone; other producers become a real part of the team, coming in and actively conferring with the director on a nightly basis (those kinds are GEMS!). We do know one thing -- on a few (very few) occasions, our directors have had to work without a producer because there was just no one available, and it about killed them!

You don't really appreciate what you've got until you don't have it, hmmm?

"taking care of the nuts-and-bolts details so the director doesn't go nuts trying to do everything"..

Isn't everyone in community theater already nuts? ;)

On the subject of producers being at rehersals, when I produce I try to at least stop into one rehersal a week, and be at every rehersal during production week. I find that by being there problems and concerns are more likely to get communicated to me (or even observed first hand), so they can be delt with before the get out of hand.

Several years ago our board approved a detailed set of job descriptions, including producer. They are available on our website, www.act1.org. The job descriptions can be found at www.act1.org/jobs.htm.
