bullet Topic: How to recruit volunteers?
    Posted: 12/01/02 at 12:26am
Greetings theater lovers, I am looking for volunteers to help my organization to operate as professionally as possible. I am located in Chicago, Illinois but I can and will use help from anywhere. I need Board Members that will be willing to work to build a strong rapport with the business and private sectors for donations. I also need officers that will oversee day to day business operations and a complete production staff.
I need leads as to how to find such ones. Any ideas? if so please respond. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward tohearing from you soon. Dennis Howell

Every non profit organization that I know of is looking for volunteers. We all have our own way of finding them. Volunteers go where they are appreciated, where they are given meaningful work to do and where they can have fun with a group of people. Most of all, volunteers want to be part of an organization that is respected and appreciated in the community.

When we started a few years ago, we had a group of five of us that did everything - from being the Board of Directors to producing our plays to selling tickets and so on. It took a while before we had a significant number of volunteers.

Looking for volunteers before you have a product is hard if not impossible. You will have a hard time convincing anyone that your organization is something they want to give valuable time to until they can see the kind of work you do.

My advice is to look at who you have to help today and do something that they can handle and start to make a reputation for your group. As you become better known, you will find that volunteers will find you.

But remember that getting a volunteer is only one tenth of the work - keeping them is far more difficult.

Good luck.
