For my production, I want to get the effect of many flashbulbs going off randomly, without having to put actors onstage with flash cameras. A strobe was suggested, but to me that has a different look, plus I want the flashes to be random, as they are at a press conference. Any ideas?

I've used single use cameras for that sort of thing (fireworks in the basement for "you can't take it with you" I set up a "nail board to trigger them and got shocked a few times, but I lived).
Another possibility would be more than 2 strobes set for different flash rates and brightness (gels perhaps?)Turn them all on at once and you would get randomish flashes. How random would depend on how many strobes you have.
