Our small community threater group (translation modest budget) seeks info on relatively low - moderatly priced digital cameras to be used to take cast head shots, set promo shots, and pictures of props and set pieces so we can catagorize them. Most of our set props and set pieces are borrowed from individuals. I figure if we can get shots of what people are willing to loan us it will be easier to find what we need. Noone in our group has widespead experience with more cameras than what they happen to own. Thanks.

If all you want is a snapshot-sized photo of your props and the headshots are for a website, a relatively low end digital camera would be just fine. Something with a resolution no greater than than 1024 X 768pixels. You might see them advertized as 1 to 1.3 Megapixel cameras. If on the other hand you want to create posters from your photos, higher resolutions would be justified. (2 to 3.5 Megapixel.) Something many people don't realize is if you want to view these photos on a computer (straight off the hard drive or via the Internet) a resolution of 800 by 600 or 1024 by 768 pixels is plenty good enough. Higher resolutions will appear too large to fit on the screen and they also take up way more memory. In other words, the higher the resolution, the fewer photos can be stored on the camera's storage medium. Compact Flash is common and fairly inexpensive, but almost all the formats are affordable these days. Check for sales at your local electronics stores for additional memory. There's way more to say on this subject, but this should get you pointed in the right direction.
