bullet Topic: Small Cast Shows

Any suggestions for a smaller cast show (15 people, tops), preferably one that is semi well known? Thanks!

What kind of show are you looking for? There are literally thousands of shows that fit your criteria and hundreds that are well known. Are you looking for a comedy? Drama? Musical? Mystery? That would help narrow it down.

Sorry. I should have specified more. I suppose I am looking for something more of a comedy or light-hearted musical. I would like one that is pretty well known, or good for a college-age audience.

Neil Simon is always a good bet.

You can do one or all three acts of Plaza Suite. Bafoot in the park also has a small cast.

It doesn't have 15 people, but "Barefoot in the Park" is a six person cast and is a lot of fun.

Dramatists Play Service will let you search their catalog by number of men and women in the cast. French organizes their catalog by cast size.

You seem like the rest of us - more women than men - it is difficult to find plays that meet this criteria - most contemporary plays have smaller casts (ususlly less than eight) the older plays have larger casts but are heavily weighted with men (Arsenic and Old Lace - 11 men and 3 women or The Caine Mutiney Court Martial (15 men).

There are several plays that have very flexible casts - Robert Fulghums Everything I Really...Kindergarten is an example. The catalogs usually indicate if casting is flexible. I just finished re-reading Gurney's Dining Room - it could be cast with a larger number of actors although Gurney cautions against it. If you have younger actors, look at a Milmore and Van Zandt farce (Love, Sex and the IRS for example) or something by Gurney or Tribute by Bernard Slade. Neil Simon is also a good option - some of his earlier work had larger casts - look at The Good Doctor. A lot of his stuff has not aged well but I love the Female Version of The Odd Couple - two men and six women. If your actors are older look at Over The River and Through The Woods, The Cemetary Club or Waiting in the Wings.

Hope this helps.

I'm a Senior in high school, and last year I stage managed for Steel Magnolias. That has a fairly small cast, and is very well known. Depends on what genre you're going for, but this went over very well in the community.
