We are doing Barnum and I am trying to figure out the water color trick he does in Colors of my life. I have some ideas, but everything I try ends up too clear. I am looking to make a more opaque liquid. I work with High school kids, so chemicals are really not an option... any ideas?

G'day Aimee!
I don't know the show, but have you thought of using a UV effect, which can be done in with various fluro colours.
I remember doing it back in the 50's, with the Gang show for a 'Minstral number.

the water starts out clear, he pours it from glass to vase and back again.. THEN it changes color. I will keep looking, we do have a working idea, it is just not as dark as I'd like

could you put food coloring in the bottom of the pitcher (or other pigment, perhaps the color that you add to paint) then when the clear water goes into the pitcher it mixes with the pigment before you  pour it back into the glass.

I am using a variation of that... but since the water needs to go from the pitcher, to the glass, then BACK in to the pitcher where it changes color... we can not put anything in the bottom. We have tried using, well kool-aid, as it dissolves the best, and put it on the side of the pitcher on double sided tape so when the water needs to change, you just pour it over the tape and it is good. Powdered food coloring oddly does not work as well.. it leaves dark smears along the tape... I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas on how to make it more opaque... so far, red kool-aid give the most vivid color
