I asked this question before but got no replies and I really need some opinions!!!  Do you as a group pick a director, and let the director pick the show they want to do, or do you as a group pick the shows first, and then find directors for them??  Please reply quickly!!  we are meeting Sunday!!!  It is Thursday!!!

We solicit directors to propose shows they would like to direct for our group.  The board members then consider two factors: Does the director have sufficient experience or credibility to direct a show for us?  And is the show that he/she is proposing consistent with the artistic integrity and image of our group?  Sometimes we'll say yes to a director, but ask them to propose a different show.  We do six shows a year and are currently committed to specific productions through August of 2011.  It works for us.

This is the the same way that it is done in nearly all groups here, in west Aussie land.

As someone who's worked with area theatres for over 10 years in KC, I've seen it both ways. There's a theatre that requests directors submit proposals, and there's a theatre where they have the season then request directors to interview.

While I'd have to say the majority have a season first, I think it's just something your theatre needs to decide on your own based on what your mission statement is (i.e., are you more interested in presenting 'theme seasons'? then go with having a season first; are you more interested in supporting directors? then go with the first way) and what you're trying to accomplish as an organization.

We hold director proposals very early on. Depending on what looks promising a few might be chosen and any holes left will be filled by the suggestion of the play selection committee and director interview will be held for those shows. It's a long process so you have to do it quite a ways out.
