bullet Topic: Scrim Alternatives
    Posted: 2/01/10 at 9:30pm
Alright, we're doing "Still Life With Iris" on a shoestring budget.  I am set on using a scrim.  We are trying to get one from a local community theater that doesn't use theirs anymore (they got a bigger stage, and the old one doesn't fit).

However, we're staging this show in a cafeteria and the demensions are still WAY to big (15x30) for our set.  I need something closer to 10x15 or 15x15.

I have checked into Rosebrand's remnant shop and have found a few things that are cheap compared to a new scrim, but would force us to have a seam.  It is more than I would want to pay for a seam in it.

So, what are some fabric alternatives that I could buy which would have the same properties of a scrim without the cost!

Thanks for the help,
Matt

I have used shadeclothwhich is effective & you can get it from your local hardware centre outdoor section.

It is normaly availble upto 3.6 metre [12'] widths off the roll, so just buy enough shadecloth length to do the stage width, hanging the cloth width to cover the stage hieght. It comes in about six colours of which black is the best chioce, however one thing to be aware of is it is subject to a small amounts of light bounce, dependant upon the 'X' & 'Y' focusing of the lanterns in your 'Cafeatre' rig & with lighting sight lines.
Not only but also if you contact Vicki Franks [member here] I'm sure she would be able to help!

A new Chameleon 10' x 15' finished and flame retardant treated scrim would be $ 176.55.  We have two close to your size in the bargains section of our site for $ 125.

Hi Matt, I would hate to take business away from Vicki, but in storage I have many free remnants of black or white FR sharkstooth scrim the size you need.  Since it is unfinished, it doesn't have webbing along the top or a chain pocket at the bottom, but you could staple it tightly to a custom wooden frame.  Let me know, I would be glad to help.  -Dana

Would you have any other scrims for sale "cheap"? Would we be able to paint a scene on one side and then position an actor behind so when lit from behind the scrim disappears and the actor shows through?

When painting a scrim if you use Casien paint you are able to wash it out & repaint another scene later on, as with the Rosco Iddings paint;-

Have a look at Vicki franks site for the transformation effect demo

While it is not as good as Cameleon scrim [vicki's product] you can use & get away with domestic continious net curtaining, but invarably there are a lot of draw backs using net curtaininng matterails.

If a scrim is properly painted you can still accomplish the reveal effect and see through it.  The key is to paint it so that you don't fill the holes in the scrim.  (All scrims are fabrics with 'holes' in them.)  With the Chameleon scrim a dilute latex paint works well.  There are directions on our web site.
