bullet Topic: A Good Halloween Show
    Posted: 4/10/09 at 1:22pm
I am looking for a good Halloween show that fits these parameters:

1.    No flying
2.    Reasonable cast size
3.     wil not especially offend the sensibilities of Mormons
4.    personal preference for gore (about PG 13 level)
5.    Not a musical

I have very little experience directing, and might end up directing the show, or having a HS student direct.  Our HS theater cast (the last show anyway) were mostly Mormons.  I don't know if they find Halloween especially offensive, but some religious people do.  I would prefer to work backstage or in the light booth, but that may not happen.  A show people have heard of would probably be a draw, for actors as well as audience.

A play suitable for Halloween that will not especially offend Mormon sensibilities.

I regret that I am not aware of what Mormon sensibilities are, let alone those regarding Halloween.

Dracula by Stephen Dietz (Dramatists Play Service) is always a good one.

It's a Scream by David DeBoy is a very light, fun little play that's perfect for Halloween.

There are several different versions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde that may work for your group.  We have also considered a sort of readers theatre where we have someone read two or three of Edgar Allen Poe stories and have it acted out.  Would be perfect for a High School group.

As far as I know, Mormons as a rule don't have a problem with Halloween (although I am LDS myself, I wouldn't claim to speak for the whole church).  They might have a bigger problem with language and gore.  Many Mormons won't see R-rated movies, for example.

Dracula, as mentioned above (either the Stephen Dietz version or the Hamilton Deane/John Balderston version from Samuel French) would be fine.

The Woman in Black by Stephen Malatratt (Samuel French) could also be fun (although it is a small cast).

How about doing a murder mystery?  That would seem to be fitting for the Halloween season.

If you like comedies I recommend that you check out Pat Cooks' Dr Jeckyl, No Place to Hyde.

I've not done the show but I've read it and I think it would be a real audience pleaser.  I want to play the part of the butler so bad. Wink

Get a copy and read through it ... see what you think.

"It's a Scream", a comedy-mystery by David DeBoy might fit.  We did it several years ago, and the audience loved it...
