This fall I will be directing "Night of the Living Dead" and several scenes require edible flesh for the zombies to snack on. Has anyone directed this show or had this situation before? Any thoughts or ideas as to how to do this are very welcome.
oh yeah, the whole show is supposed to be in black and white as well. Although I haven't decided whether that will happen or not.

Depends upon what part of the body the "flesh" comes from. Standard use for edible flesh in films has traditionally been GELATIN. However if you have vegans they won't eat gelatin. Gelatin - either KNOX unflavored OR even basic Jello can be made to look like real fleshy material that can be consumed with the appropriate Karo Syrup blood and such - just don't let any diabetics at it or they could go into shock with all that sugar. But if left to dry out in the air AND if Jello or KNOX is mixed thoroughly with just enough hot water to dissolve it, it can be made thick and the left to dry in the open air till it becomes a bit rubbery. Then that can be applied somehow and used as the flesh that gets eaten. AS you know you can mix colors of Jello to achieve a reasonable translucent flesh color - namely red, yellow will give you orange and then you can tone that down with green, etc......check your color wheel. But yeah, gelatin (Jello or KNOX unflavored) work.

To anyone still interested in this topic:
We did "Night" for its 40th anniversary. We did the "black & white" thing but anyone still alive had one costume item of color. Only zombies had grey or white makeup. Was more expensive than I'd have liked, but we used pizza. The mozzarella, red sauce, and gooey undercrust made great zombie munchings, and audience members who weren't in on the trick were pretty grossed out. Our zombies came down the aisle of the theatre and each had handfulls, so it held up to close inspection. One med/large pizza was enough for about 6 ghouls (but it depends on your local pizza house). |
