bullet Topic: Interview Questions
    Posted: 12/15/08 at 10:01am
We are interviewing this week for a partime light/sound technician for our high school. I've been invited to sit in on the interview and I wondered if there were any "technical" questions I should ask that I wouldn't know about - since I don't really understand the "technical" stuff?

My fear is that no one at the interview really understands the technical end of things and that we might miss something important?

This person will be expected to run lights and sound for all performing arts productions and concerts, as well as oversee the use of the equipment by outside community groups. I believe the adminsitration is hoping that the person will start a "production crew" made up of interested high school students.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Amy

I don't know either, but maybe you can get a "consultant" to do pro bono work for your school (bribe them with coffee from a coffee shop rather than the cafeteria) :) .  The work would simply be to there for the interviews, ask those questions on your behalf, and advise you.

If you don't have a college or university, or a community theatre tech director that can help, many times a place like a large music store might have an individual that could do it.  They may rent sound and lighting equipment and so have the expertise.  Also, there might be a show band in your area that has a tech person to do their lights and sound.  Who knows it may be a former student of your school. I bet your community has someone.

Even if the consultant is not familiar with your system, they should be able to ask the right question, or at least have a better sense of the applicant's technical abilities than you.

Good luck.
