Charlie's Aunt is truly one of the great classic "farce" plays of the world theatre

It works beatifully when done within the period it is written.  The dialougue is very high class British and when presented with dead seriousness and total aplumb, it is amazingly funny.

One of the most famous "man dressing as a woman" plays of all time.

We presented it several years ago and while I was concerned by the "britishness", our audience truly loved this show.

We did "Charley's Aunt" in April and it played to very good houses.  You need to have a director that understands farce and knows how to handle a well-made play.  Foremost, you must have a great "Charley's Aunt" - ours had never done anything at our theater (although he had his own company and was an exceptional director as well as an actor).  he literally made that show.

We did the show in just two locations as opposed to three to avoid the second intermission and a long redress of the set.  We played the garden down stair of the grand rag with an appropriate drop and topiary.  We combined the garden and the last scenes together  and it worked pretty well.  The biggest challenge we had was finding period furniture.

Good luck!

Charlie

We put it on at Mesa High and it was awesome!  We entered it into state competition and it earned superiors.  The reason we weren't chosen as mainstage at State Thespian is because we had also just won the year before and they allowed the other school to have the opportunity. If you have any questions-estones@cox.net.
Thanks, Sandy

I was in "Charley's Aunt" 25 years ago.  It was a great deal of fun and the audience loved it.  The set was PVC and cloth with furniture.

I saw two productions of "Charley's Aunt" at our HS.  The first had more period costumes, and the actor playing "Babs" (Lord Fancourt Babberly) was more convincing as Charley's Aunt.  I liked both productions, although maybe I was prejudiced more towards the first because my friends were acting in it.  It is very funny.  I think the age of the fathers made a difference in how funny it was (it was funnier if they seemed a lot older than the sons).
