bullet Topic: LED Lighting
    Posted: 11/27/07 at 11:01pm
We have an old building and electrical capacity is always an issue.  We are looking at beginning to buy new lights/additional lighting/lighting board instead of renting.  Recently I saw an ad for LED lighting, which uses much less juice, can be daisied, and provides multiple colors with one can.  Was thinking about using for overhead color wash, as they only work 20-30'.  Has anybody had any experience with them?

I can't help, but ask the prospective suppliers to let you try out the rig, on a sale or return basis. They will have demo units & systems available, so it should not be a pronlem or you may have to rent them for a demo or two.
However there is the Fluro 4 colour wash, from 'White Light' which may be an idea?
The National Opera in Britain have just installed them as Boarder 'X' wash lighting.
I suppose that is a problem there with the lower consumer voltages of 120VAC, which has about double the Amps per Wattage output, then we experiance.
[We are 440VAC 3 phase & 254VAC single phase]
Is there any way you could get the Mains upgraded?

hope this helps?
Here is a 'Shoot out' between LEDcans v Parcans;-

We used some LED strip lights for a recent production. don't recall how many were in use (ther were alot though), but we did daisy chain a fair number of them together.
They can produce quite a dramatic amount of color.  I was not really impressed by the "whit light" look they produced with all LED's lit,  but then again I did not get a chance to play with them myself.

One good thing they reduce the Amperage required, which is an advange with your 120VAC supply situiation, which must make it easier.

{As we are 254VAC it takes under half the Amps, for the same amount of wattage used. [it is not the Voltage but Amperage that kills.]}
