I made one year ago (Beatrix Potter stories for the Peter Rabbit ballet--still have the dance heads for the characters) essentially out of 8' flats using a fabric hinge as the binding and leaving the muslin unfastened on one page so that characters could emerge from the book.

If you need it lighter weight the same could be done with aluminum pipe as frames--again attached with a fabric hinge binding, or with a section of metal / wood top and bottom with holes drilled in to accomodate the frames pivoting as the pages get turned.

At 6' you could do PVC, but I'm thinking this will be less rigid.

You also might look at a recent post about a set piece that was a folding fan for more ideas.  The two (books and fans) have similarities.

you can also try styrofoam. super light and usually sturdy enough to transport, as long as packed properly.

good luck!

We constructed one using flats as well with a fabric and foam binding, with foam pages so it had some thickness to it. The foam was painted with shadowed pages, overall it was pretty light, not a one-person lift, but definitely movable enough.
