I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that responded. The responses have been very helpful.

I am not closing the topic. I am still open to finding out what other organizations are doing for the holidays.

Chris:  I doubt that we qualify as being a theater group (in fact, I'm almost sure that we don't.).  We are doing an in-house written play called "Shenandoah: A Christmas Story."  This is for a one-time performance at our church.

That actually sounds really cool.  Any music at all?  Full-length or one-act?

We're doing a variety of Christmas scenes from classic literature...Little Women, Gift of the Magi and A Christmas Carol adapted by a local author.  It's crazy with 29 kids from 5 to 18 doing the roles but we're having a blast.  Our stage is finally near finished and the show is the end of Nov.  We've been rehearsing in a classroom so I'm praying it all works out.

This is probably no help to anyone, but we are doing a murder mystery (adult dinner/ $45.00per person) where we kill Santa.  The players are Mrs. Claus, the soon to be Mrs. Claus, 2 elves, and 2 reindeer (one of who is really a caribou).  Good times!

Chris:

Shenandoah: A Christmas Story is loosely based up the original Jimmy Stewart movie Shenandoah.   Charlie Anderson is a widower in Virginia in the 1850s-1860s.  The story starts with the first Christmas when Charlie and his new bride, Martha, arrive at their new home.  The various scenes all revolve around Christmas times.  There is a scene on the battlefield, where James Anderson, a Union Captain, confronts Josh Porter, a Confederate enlisted man and also a neighbor and hope-to-be fiancee to young and only sister Jennie Anderson.  At another point in time, Robert Anderson, the younger son (aged 12) gets "captured" by Union forces who mistakenly take him as a Rebel soldier.

There is music:  Various contemporary Christmas music to match the scenes.  The play was written by someone who has never written a play; the play is directed by someone who has never directed a play; most of the players have never acted in anything.  It will be a hoot!

This year, we're doing a traditional british panto - written by 3 members - "Jack and the Beanstalk".

Next year we also have a Christmas Classic -"Guys and Dolls".

We usually do 3 shows a year, and traditionally the November/December slot is the large cast musical.   February/March is often an entry into the Western Ontario Drama League festival, and June is a crowd pleaser.

Because we share the facility with a professional summer theatre - we turn the theatre over to them mid-June, and get it back early Sept.

We just did "A Christmas Survival Guide: A Mini Musical Spectacular".  We only do one weekend and I am still hearing from people who saw the show last week and loved it.  It's a great show but a bear to put together for your first musical which this was.

Nuncrackers...the Christmas sequel to Nunsense. It opens this Friday. Quite a hilarious show but heavy on costumes and props.
