bullet Topic: all girls musical
    Posted: 7/28/07 at 12:52am
i work for a girl scout camp directing their theatre program in the summer. we had such a seccessful summer this year that they decided to extend the program for next year. up to now we have done cabaret/ review type shows, but next summer i was hoping to do a full scale show.we have limited resources/ time and an all girl camp. does any one know a good show that has an all female cast thats child apropreate and can be done with limited resources? i thought of nunsence and ruthless, but neither would be apropriate for children.
you know you work in community theatre when your couch has been in more shows than you have.

on one of the script sites, I believe it's Dramatist's Play Service, they have a playfinder where you can enter the type of play you need and the size and gender of the cast and it lists shows that fit your needs. I can't personally think of any musical that doesn't have at least one guy, but I'm not an expert by any means.

What about doing a gender bender?  I mean, pick a musical you want to do and cast cross dressing girls in the boy's parts?  It works in Japan -- some of their most popular theatrical companies are all female professional companies that do all the standard musicals.  It's a thought.

Wow that's a tough one.   All girls and age appropriate.   I guess A..My Name is Alice is out.    Take look at Quilters, although there is no cast recording of it that exists.

you're welcome, I actually think the role gender bending sounds like much more fun for the girls and audience, but you have to be careful because if the script doesn't specify that a role can be either, it's the same as changing dialogue, a big nono.

Eveharrington is right but it doesn't hurt to ask the publisher that holds the performance rights if it's ok to change genders of characters or to have girls play boys roles.   Given your circumstances they may agree to it.   But make sure you get it in writing if they do.

i think the gender bender would work almost anywhere but at this camp. you'd be so surprised at the kind of complants we get from parents.

Here is another play search you can do similar to that suggested;-
As this is for a scouts, there is a wealth of songs & scripts, freely available produced by the 'Gang show', which would be available to your group.
I became a 'Gangster' back in '57, as member of the Newcastle Gang & still have my original Red Scarf or as we called it our  'Neckaa'.
This is a bit about it's history from Ralph Reader tknown as Mr Gang Show & the founder;-
This was my home show untill 1960;- http://www.newcastlegangshow.co.uk/ When I was transported to Oz as a 10 quid POHM & helped bring about the Perth Gang Show into being.
I believe BSA Troop 3 in Derby CT still produce an anual production & they may be able to help out.
as for gender bending, no problem as the Gang orginaly was for males only being Boy Scouts & females were the Girl Guides & not part of it.
{ I wonder how you would go with a gender swap, doing 'Irma La Douce' There is only one bird in the show & the rest all blokes - Irma- might pose a few hiccups?}

Honk! Jr could be done with mostly girls.  Parents might object to having girls playing Drake (the dad), Greylag (military goose), the Turkey, and the Rooster.    But in the junior version the Cat and The Bullfrog could be played by girls.
