Could you please name some plays that are suitable for a small high school drama club where everyone is cast? We're talking about 40 people, not much budget, and not heavy in the talent department. Thank you!

Take a look at "Up The Down Staircase" written by Bel Kaufman.

Are they mostly girls?  Take a look at Stage Door.  For more balanced casts, look at anything George S. Kaufman wrote or co-wrote.  In fact, look at many plays before 1950: typically large casts, no offensive material, often single-set.  And YES I know it's done to death, but Our Town would seem to fit your needs pretty well. (That's WHY it's done to death; it fits EVERYBODY's needs pretty well!)

Chekhov wrote a number of good small-cast one-acts -- e.g. A Wedding Proposal, The Bear.  Look at a couple of translations if you can; some are bad.

You might find some useable stuff among David Ives' work.  Some of his plays are VERY short, and some may not be appropriate for your group, but all of them are witty.

And there's always the Neil Simon Suites (Calfornia, Plaza, London, god knows how many now).

They're out there, but you do have to sift through an awful lot of chaff when it comes to one-acts.

The high school where I used to live would let the kids write and direct their own one-acts.
