I'm trying to pick an audition song for it... i figured something really upbeat like new philosophy (charlie brown) or popular (wicked)or some people(gypsy). see i'm getting a voice teacher and i want to have a few songs in my "back pocket" so i figured an upbeat song and a ballad-love song... but i dont know so that's why i really need your help!! thanks karissa |

It is always a good idea to have several songs in your back pocket. I would go with 1 up beat and 1 ballad. I don't know your voice range so I'm not sure what would work for you. Ask the voice teacher what they think. they should be able to help you pick good songs for you.

Mm. Have a few songs in your back pocket. I know that - from what
you've said - you're not gonna do this, but if you're gonna audition
for a show, it's a big mistake to pick a song from that show to sing.
God knows how many people sing Tomorrow when auditioning for Annie, or
Memory when auditioning for Cats.
Try to pick songs that have character and allow you to act as much as sing. Most directors don't look for actors who can sing, but singers who can act. |

New philosophy may not be a good idea; it's a duet. You want, when auditioning, to choose a song in the style of the show that you're auditioning for. Maybe look into songs that the person who wrote the musical seussical(ahrens and flaherty, i think) wrote. Good luck with your audition and let us know the outcome!

Is there any information from the auditors available to you? How did you find out about the auditions? Usually there is some info: for example, the audition announcement may say "prepare 16 bars of an uptempo contemporary song in your range." If there is any such info available, DO WHAT IT SAYS!!! If they ask for a ballad, don't do a patter song. If they want 1 minute, don't do a minute and a half. That's the fastest way to put off the auditors. If there isn't any info, can you get some? Is there a phone number or email available for the director or MD or someone? That being said, a song by the authors of the show is a good choice. I know nothing of Seussical The Musical, but it is Ahrens and Flaherty, and they've done some great stuff (Once On This Island, Ragtime, Schoolhouse Rock) - check into those for something appropriate. You want to show what you can do. Do you have a rich gospel-type voice? A rock voice? Belt? High? Low? Work with your voice teacher to find some songs that show off what you do best. Hope this helps! |
