Hello all you glamorous geniuses, I am here in NH wanting to open a rural (neat old stone "store" now for sale) music hall and possible dinner or other theater. All guts here, v intuitive and will hv the money, alas, no experience. Around bldg are major corn fed farmers, and their wives, kiddies. Must be a market out here at crossroads to get them to come in, sit down and get culture shocked? Or better yet to bring their own fiddles? What say you? Not far from Lawrence KS where there are also KU students to cull from as well. Ideas? Serious, please. I have vision.

Here ?Perth WA? a theatre was started up, back in the 60?s, using an old dilapidated main street shop. Being just a number of rooms, they adjoined a few rooms together, for the punters, & knocked a hole in a wall, between 2 of them to set up a stage. The opening production, which they named after the theatre, was the ?Old Time Music Hole?. This was started by a collection of performers, led by a character called Frank Baden-Powell [No relation to Lord Robert Baden-Powell of Gillwell, who founded the Boy Scout movement]. The original season was planned for about 20 performances, it took off & ran for almost 20 years! It had the same basic format, of a British Music Hall, by adding new songs & sketch?s, as the cast changed. This went on to become an Empire for old Frank, by adding other establishments like ?Diamond Lill?s Wild West Saloon? &"Dirty Dicks? that went on to be franchised in the Eastern States & even in your country. It came to an end when Frank fell off his perch & popped his clogs. Originally there was nothing served to the punters, only if the brought their own Grog! It wasn?t until the Liquor Act changed. that allowed premises to sell & serve alcohol as long as food was supplied, He then was able to flog grog, because he supplied ample free bowls of peanuts & potato chrisps on the tables, side stepping the law! When he became established, with the Music Hole, he started to serve meals at Diamond Lill?s, than at Dirty Dicks, with a medieval Banquet & plenty of ?Wassail?. You could do something similar, using your local tradition of the western Music Hall/saloon style show, even call it The Hole in the Wall, with buxom saloon gals, a piano player & whatever! You can even have hold town sheriff or Mayoral election, where by each table of punters, put forward a candidate, who is elected upon their performance, & the winner is included as part of the show or sketch. Meals don?t have to be flash, in fact something as simple as, chicken in a basket, that they eat with their hands & supply Gingham bibs. You can make the show suitable for all the family, naughty but nice, as in Panto or vaudeville! |
