Does anyone have an accurate definition of community theater? Can someone just start a theater for profit on their own and call it a community theater? I have worked for a community theater for 16 years and this has happened in our area. I don't believe the term "community" is appropriate in this case.

While it may not be appropriate &/or of concern, it is only a generic word, used widely. If you look around your region, you will possibly find business using Community as part of their trading name! We have a number here, such as the Community News Group & the Community Medical Group, along with other ones! We have a number of theatre groups here, which use a registered business/trading name, rather than being incorporated as an not for profit association. Which confuses the volunteers & the community punters as well. Some even produce seasons state that proceeds go to &/or produced under a charity?s banner! It?s annoying but a fact of life! The amateurs who perform these productions, become defensive & very upset, if anyone dares to challenge, the status of the production group! So I doubt if there is much you can do, so your in the good old Catch 22 situation |
