bullet Topic: Breakaway glass Alternatives?
    Posted: 9/28/04 at 2:02pm

Hello everyone;

Our community theatre group is doing a play next month where breaking a bottle and a vase over someone's head is required; we looked into getting breakaway glass for it, but the shelf life is apparently not great for them, plus we are going to need a minimum of 3 vases and 3 bottles (two productions and a dress rehersal), so by the time we get it shipped to us, we're looking at around $125 for just a minor scene in the play.

Are there any cheaper alternatives, yet still effective??

That link has a way to make sugar glass panels. I should think that there would be a way to adapt the technique to making your own bottles, but I don't know for sure. That looks to be your only option without buying the breakaways.

Use clay instead. Either spend an evening with your
cast making lightweight clay pots, jugs, bottles and
vases in the proper size and configurations or enlist
the help of a local artisan who might do the job as a
favor or for advertising in the program.

The sugar glass will not work as bottles and vases.  Plus under theatre lights it melts.  There is a resin that I use to make breakaway items.  But by the time you buy the molding and casting materials and the resin it would probably cost more than buying them.  Plus it takes a few days to make.  The good part is that the mold can be reused for a long time and the resin pieces can be remelted several times before they start to turn an amber color.
