bullet Topic: torches and monsters
    Posted: 5/13/04 at 11:11pm

(Love this site)  It's been years, but once again I've been called upon to make torches.  I've sure there are good ideas out there for home-made jobs.  What's new and different?  Also, I need to make a house explode into fire and burn.  No, let me rephrase that:  I need to make a house SAFELY explode into fire and burn.  I could use powder, of course, and lights, but I'm looking for something a bit more clever.  (The structure need not collapse, by the way.  In fact, let's hope it doesn't!)  Open to suggestions, but I only have a few day to commit to a decision.  Rock on!

Get thee to a nunnery!

I did the buring house trick for a production of Frankentstein a while back (sounds like that's the production you are doing also.) We did it pretty simply. Inside the house we put a fog machine, a fan, and some yellow gelled lights. The fan was set to blow the fog out of an open window in the house, and pulsating the lights gave fire light effect. We started the fire with a little bit of fog, the fan on low speed, and the lights dim, and slowly increasesd everything as the fire got larger. Even though you never actually see anything that looks like flames it was very effective.

Get a friendly ?sparky? to wire up a circuit with a neon starter in series with the neutral side of a globe fitting, this will give the flickering effect. If he wires the gubbons into a box with a male plug top, for a number of circuit outlets, different colour globes or coloured Par globes can be used upto 150w per circuit. This can be operated thru a dimmer control & you will find the flicker rate will change with the light increase or decrease.
However this must be done by a qualified licensed electrician!
