bullet Topic: musical without dancing
    Posted: 5/28/07 at 11:37am
Our Village Players have never done a musical and maybe it is about time, but I was wondering if there are any good musicals without a lot of dancing. I am not sure if we have a choreographer in our midst, but we do have good singers. Oh and this shouldn't be a children's musical. All of our actors are mature adults over 45 who can act young, but the audience is mostly active seniors citizens.

There are many terrific musicals out there that don't require much in the way of dancing.

Anything by Sondheim--Into the Woods, Company (small cast, difficult songs)

Guys and Dolls doesn't have to have much dancing in it to work. A little here and there, I suppose.

Gilbert and Sullivan--HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance

Depending on what you are really looking for there are many shows that can fit this criteria.
There are some darker musicals that are crowd pleasers like Jekyll and Hyde, Little Shop of Horrors, City of Angels, and Man of La Mancha.  You may want to look at Follies, Titanic, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, or many of the Nunsens musicals.  And then there are some wonderful review shows like Putting it Together, Side By Side By Sondeim, and many others.
Most musicals can use simple staging for choreography.  There are many shows that require elaborate production numbers and these shows should be "wow" factors.  But with these other shows you can have the same "wow" factor with creative staging.
The two greatest days in a theater persons life, the day you start a new show and the day the damn thing closes.

"Working", "Assassins", any of the "retrospective" musicals dedicated to a particular composer or singer.

You have a real mean streak.  Picture an emoticon with his tongue sticking out here:       (there wasn't one included among the choices....believe me, I looked).

And....by the way......there is a LOT of dancing in Pippin.  (another tongue out emoticon)  Which was choreographed by yours truely, thank you very much.  Of course, I was a young teenaged dancer then.

"Godspell" and "She Loves Me" both have little to no dancing, depending on if you wish to make the one chorus number in "She Loves Me" be dance-y or not.

Both are very family friendly shows, too.

1940's Radio Hour does not have a lot of dancing,
of course there is no singing until about half way through too.
