bullet Topic: Sardines for Noises off
    Posted: 1/29/07 at 11:15pm
We're doing Noises Off in March and need to create several plates of sardines.  Any advice on what to make them out of?  I think using real fish is out of the question.

Real fish are definately out of the question... we used some kind of rubberized plastic sardine type things, I'm not sure where we got them... could have been a bait shop. I'll see if I can remember to ask.

I get fake fish, worms etc at a sporting goods store. I actually found them once at the local Walmart. They are realistically colored and are made of that really wiggly rubbery stuff. They aren't expensive either.

It was definitely fake sardines that are normally used for fishing bait, and I do believe they might even have come from the local Walmart. Very realistic, with an appropriate rubbery wiggle. I played Dottie, and I just tromped right on 'em and made a face for the "squished fish" bit. The audience groaned appropriately even though nothing actually got squished. In rehearsal, they made a nice splatty sort of sound when they got dumped on my head from the second floor, too -- I doubt the audience ever heard it, though, they were laughing too hard.

you could go to a sporting goods store or even walmart's fishing section and look to see if they have any fishing lores.  Most of them a very realistic looking.  It all depends if you are looking for something larger than normal so people can see them.

I hate to say the same thing, but fishing lures are the way to go. You can get them in a package without the hooks. I think we even glued some to a couple of plates since there is so much action going on.

I actually ordered some from eBay for another show that we needed sardines for.  It was cheaper for me to order them in bulk than it was to order the smaller amounts at Walmart, etc.  However, the ones at Walmart and other sporting goods stores aren't that expensive if it's a shorter run.

We found some fishing lures that were rubber and actually looked exactly like sardines.  We hot glued a couple of the plates that didn't need to "spill" and put others loosely on plates.

I made some fish in latex for Brigadoon. They looked so realistic, some of the female cast members refused to touch them!Smile

You just make a two-part plaster mould of a real fish, (frozen of course), and then make latex casts using the slush method, ie. pouring in latex and then pouring it out again. It leaves a "skin" of latex which cures inside the plaster mould. Do that a few times until you're sure the skin is thick enough to be strong. Open the mould, and you've got a perfect fish in soft rubber. Paint with latex-based paint, and maybe dip them in silicone to make them even more slippery.

With a two-part mould, you could make quite a few sardines. They'd all be the exact same shape, of course, but that would make them easier to pack together, just as real sardines are packed.
