I am currently involved in starting an artists cooperative in my area. The cooperative is designed to bring together different artists to create and to teach in various mediums. One of the areas I am interested in is theater. My question is specifically about the legality of fundraising. Does a community theater have to have official non-profit status to put on fundraisers? If anyone has any info in this area I would greatly appreciate your insight.
Thanks, Lew Kahler |

It really helps to have IRS non-profit status when doing fundraising, so that people who make donations can take a tax deduction. If you are not non-profit then the donations are not tax-deductable.

Take a look at the article "Why a Non-Profit Theater Company?" on the home page of this site - it will answer a lot of questions.
