I am helping our community theater get going again and we're looking for ideas for our first play. The cast will be mixed, with younger(11+ yrs. old) actors as well. We'd like to include as many actors as possible (maybe a dozen all together, or so). We're in a very rural part of the state and think that a well known, light play would work best (no musicals yet). Our props were all destroyed so the set needs to be on the simple end of the spectrum. Would any other information be helpful?
If anyone has any suggestions we would be so appreciative. Thanks!!! |

Got Kids? Maybe it's because I'm directing this play right now, but I like "Cheaper by the Dozen" for a mixed cast play. Allows you to do a high end or suggestive set. Props are minimal. And the name is well known to the public. They have heard of the play, seen the movie or had to read the book in grade school. Just an idea.

I am associated with a small theater group that started doing a summer play with all middle & high school kids. We adapt Shakespeare. We've done "Comedy Of Errors" & "Taming of the Shrew". the sets were fairly simple, costumes are reusable. We do this outside in an unsecured area so the set has to be simple. Good luck! Break a leg with whatever you do.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'm looking forward to taking them to our next theater meeting. Thanks again. Rachel

I've had a lot of success with "Our Town" with a minimal set. Good luck!
