bullet Topic: Dorothys ruby red shoes
    Posted: 2/19/03 at 9:50pm
Hi...looking for a good (cheap) way to get sparkly red shoes for our Dorothy, who happens to have very large feet for a little girl (size 9 narrow womens. The "costume" shoes we have found are all to small, anyone have a good source for larger sizes? Or a good method to make our own? Thanks

I would just get a normal pair of shoes, preferably red to begin with, and cover them with red glitter. Brush on a coat of white glue and sprkinle them liberally with the glitter.

That was our first instinct, but it tends to fall off during dancing, coating the yellow brick road with red sparkles. If all else fails we will fall back on that plan.
Thanks,

Get china flats (the black cloth kind) and hand-stitch or hot glue red sequins. From off stage these have a great deal of sparkle, and you can experiment with plastic gems, too.

Problem solved, thank you for your ideas. I dont know why we didnt figure this out sooner, but our final solution was to purchase some sequined fabric rather than loose sequins. The fabric glues onto the shoes easily and the sequins are much more secure. Its working great.

I made a pair of the ruby red slippers in about two hours. Go to Walmart and buy 6 feet of the red sequins already sewn on the 1" red elastic strips. Tacky glue strips onto the shoe. (I debated using hot glue but Tacky has worked just fine. i glued ont canvas but it works just as well on a character shoe) I start at the top part of the heel and move to the toe. Cut strip here (you may want to put clear nailpolish on end of strip so it won't unravel). Then move to your next strip. 6 feet is more than enough to cover a size 7 shoe. Cost is about $8.00 total. These make great homemade birthday gifts for any age Dorothy. I wore mine to the high school I teach at as publicity for the upcoming WOZ and believe it or not, the BOYS wanted a pair!
