bullet Topic: what to give a director on opening night
    Posted: 3/07/03 at 12:51am
Hi
My friend is directing a show at a community theater. I don't
know what to give him on opening night. Is there something customary? I can only think of flowers but that doesn't seem
right for a guy.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I have been on both sides of this issue. As a director, I do not expect anything on opening night although I have received flowers. I keep a low profile - it is the actors night not mine. Closing night is different. We have a tradition that the leading actor will introduce me as director and invite me on to the stage. I have received flowers and bottles of wine (with a pretty ribbon tied around the neck) and, in one case, a wrapped package with a small gift inside.

We also introduce the back stage crew and the tech crew on closing night. The stage crew comes on stage and the tech crew usually does a chase or something else interesting with the lights.

There is an article here called "The Best Cast Gifts Ever" which is full of good ideas.

Remember - it is the thought that counts!!!

A photo of cast & crew on set is reasonable. Eckard had a frame that had 'all stars' over the top, how about a'talking frame' that can be programed. All for under 10$ jackie

Flowers are not only appropriate for any director, regardless of sex, but also part of the theater tradition. On a few occasions, I've had them sent to me at my office during the work day before that night's opening -- not only do you get to enjoy them at work, but they provide publicity for the show, since everyone asks why you're getting them. You can also give them to the director in the lobby after the show, but that means you've got to hang onto them throughout the performance. Just don't attempt to deliver them personally to the director when you arrive at the theater to see the show -- he'll be far too busy with other stuff, like checking makeup, pacing, gnawing fingernails, looking for lost props, panicking...
