bullet Topic: Greased Lightning
    Posted: 3/24/03 at 12:43am
My community theatre is doing Grease this summer, but we have run into a minor snag... Greased Lightning. We want to have an actual car or mock up of one, but we cannot fit a car into our building. We are open to any suggestions.

Thanks,
Rob

Saw a production where they used only the front end of the car which peeked out through the set. they wired up the headlights to work, but it fit in and was pretty light weight.

I worked on a production of Grease a few years and we where given the car by another area theater (and have since passed in on). The car was what I would call a "stage-conversion" of a real 57' Chevy Belair. Someone had taken the real car and cut all the body panels off the frame, and then build a large wooden chassie on caster onto which all the panels where re-mounted. It was nice because it looked real, was a lot lighter then the original car, and could be taken apart into parts that where small enough to fit through normal doorways.

Have you checked with some of the other theaters in your expanded area that might have done the show? One of our local theaters has the front end that they rent out to the community theater groups and high school groups and whatever else might need the car for that show--- and it works great every time-- and they have already done the work. (If you are anywhere near Southern California try Laguna Moulton Playhouse in Laguna Beach.)
Good Luck!

Hey there,

We used a Firefly convertible, if you can find one. We then added wings to the back... through some lights on, it looked to not bad.

Other thing to consider is Fire Marshall, may have some restrictions.
