Can anyone give me any information on the success rate of AR Gurney's Love Letters. I am thinking about producing an 8 week run of the show for my new professional non-profit producing organization. The play has been done in several benefits, but how has it fared commercially? |

I have seen an excellent production of this play ... very simple setup. A desk that the two actors perform from. But if you want a play in the same genre but even more riveting (characters are the American artist Charles Russell and his wife), you might look for a copy of MONTANA LOVE STORY by Robert Yowell. If you can't find a copy, you might email him at robert.yowell@nau.edu. He is the Director of the Department of Theatre at Northern Arizona University.

I have seen "Love Letters" done many times, and I have also played the part of Melissa in my theater's production. Everytime I have seen it done it was for a fundraiser with celebrity performers for one or two nights. The houses were always full and tickets were hard to get. Our theater did it as a short run of four performances. It was was very successful, but I don't know how it would run for 8 weeks. It seems like a long time for this show. Linda

Agreed, Linda. I played Andrew in our local version (in a one weekend dinner-theatre venue), but when I hear of other companies doing it, they use local television, radio, or civic personalities in a very short-run benefit performance. While I love the piece, I'm not sure an 8 week run would draw the response keionm is looking for. |

I too have seen this play done many times. (most notably with the late Tony Randall). A theatre here in town did a 4 week run as a tribute to a company member who passed away, every night was a new cast. the play works great for this because it is just 2 actors reading letters. I think 8 weeks may be pushing it though.
