I am doing a "Fairy Tale" play...and I need a tree...our theater doesnt have one and i need one...any ways to build one out of anything...i once saw one made out of wood that had 2 pieces u put together but dont know how they did it......help anyone?!

We made at tree that gave a very real appearance by building the trunk from a couple of 2x4s screwed together to form the rough shape and filled it out with chicken wire and paper mache. That went to the ceiling. (Our stage was cursed with a low ceiling.) Just below the top of the trunk we suspended real (bare) tree branches. We then stuck silk foilage (it looked like tree leaves) into holes drilled all around the bare branches. The resulting canopy looked very real. We even positioned a few lighting instruments so they hid in the foilage. WARNING! Be very careful to allow plenty of distance from instrument to tree branch/foilage as the lights get dangerously hot while in use!

Try a carpet cardboard roll insert - available from carpet suppliers. Build a wooden stand - over which the carpet roll can be placed - cut to appropriate height. You can make a more realistic trunk by adding modroc and painting (like plaster cast bandages) - add texture by putting newspaper underneath the modroc. Branches can be created by attatching heavy duty wire, covered in modroc/ masking tape and painting. Add green leaves.
A palm tree looks good by simply using the wires and sticking/ taping green palm frond shapes to them - use stiffish green card - use and oval shape. Fold. Cut long slits to the centre and tape. Looks good and fairy tale like.

We took chicken wire and had an insulation guy blow it onto the rounded chicken wire. We spray painted it brown and it looked very realistic.
