One of our local community theatre's is doing The Mousetrap this coming
winter by Agatha Christie. i've never read it, but I know that's it's
something like the longest running play in history or something. I'm
really interested in doing it, but I wanted to know if anyone knew
anything about the show or could give me a character rundown, maybe
general age of characters? Size of most of the parts?

there are no small parts (I know it's a cliche - LOL - but in this
instance, it's true) - the real leads are the young couple who run the bed and breakfast that the play takes place in. the characters are classic agatha christie 'types' - the over- bearing, officious lady; the nervous, sensitive young man; the masculine, no nonsense spinster; the sweet young girl and her sweet young husband; the smart, savvy policeman (who is also the most fun to play, by the way)...they're all fun. They run the gamut of ages from young adult to middle-aged...nobody is really doddering and elderly. I"ve seen it directed and performed as a serious murder mystery and I've seen it directed and performed as a high camp put-on of murder mysteries. They both worked. Though I'm not a huge fan of old war horses, as a rule - this one really DOES hold up and is quite fun to both perform and watch. edited to add: I'm sure a quick google search will bring up TONS of info for yourself - this is a very well known piece and lots has been written about it over the past fifty years |
