I wasn?t real sure where to post this one, so I thought I would give this a shot. I hope this doesn?t sound really stupid ? but how do you hold a show over? I mean ? if things are going well and it was a scheduled two-weekend run, how do you get the word out that you?re going to do an additional show ? or weekend if things are going really well. Keep in mind this is a small community (2,000 with 10,000 being college students). I would think it would be very anti-climatic if you held a show over (selling out every night) and then your final performances dwindled. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Thanks |

Scott -- Sorry to take so long to reply. We've been busy. I have no experience holding a show over as I just woon't do it. It causes too many other problems... additional royalties and approvals from the publisher, scheduling conflicts, etc. We do an annual (kind of) fundraiser with a total of 540 seats available over 6 performances. Last year we sold out in less than 5 days and ended up with a waiting list of over 200 names. Did we extend? No way. We could have made a fortune, but it would have created too many other problems. Such is life. |

Unless you have a really strong publicity/marketing
person or department, getting the word out for extending a show can be very difficult. A couple of simple methods include: -- contacting the local radio station and have them read a "news release" item that you've written yourself, telling about the added shows. -- printing up colorful "Held Over" or "More shows added" stickers and plastering them over the posters you've already set up around town. -- making a pre-show curtain speech during the scheduled run of the show, encouraging the audience to relay the good news via word-of-mouth. Good luck |

About 6 years ago..i had an idea of doing a stage version of The Carol Burnett Show...I spent 2 years finding the right cast...and finally got it up and running...In 2003 we staged it and we had a 2 weekend run planned (fri-sat). Our theatre has 260 seats and our tickets were $15. one month before opening night we were sold out. You could not get a ticket to save your life. Two weeks before opening night, we confirmed with the cast that we were "holding over the show" but we were not "officially" announcing it until we did our opening night weekend. The cast and crew were free to drop hints that were holding it over...but nothing official..The first Monday after opening weekend, I went into marketing overdrive.(i have a background in marketing and promotion) By Wednesday, our 2 final additional performance were sold out. We purchased a cheap radio package..and a massive ad in our local newspaper (ask for their charity or non-profit rate) BTW - we just wrapped The Carol Burnett Show 2! We scheduled 6 shows this time!! :) |
