Our group is doing Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit soon. We need help with an illusion for the play: getting a table to levitate. Does anyone know an effective method to do this on a stage?
Thanks |

The classic way of doing this trick is to have the participants put thier fingertips lightly on the table, then have one of the participants lift the table with thier feet or legs.
Get a table that light and put a long table cloth over it. The person manipulating the table can put thier toe under one of the legs and press down with thier hand over that same leg, effectivly pinching the table between thier hand an foot. They can then easily manipulate the table in whatever way you like. This is the basic idea, and you can do a lot of different variations on it to suit your situation. |

If the table is not too heavy there are a couple of ways...
One is to have at least two of the people wear long sleeve shirts with wood sticks or rods underneath their forearms. When they sit at the table, they slide the sticks under the edge of the table and place their hands on top. When they raise their hands the sticks lift the table. Another way is to secure wire loops on top of the table that the participants slide their fingers into and they can all lift the table together. (Don't make the wire too thin or it will be painful.) Again, this is assuming the table is not heavy. |

I would use fishing line tied to table and a pulley overhead to lift it up. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Mary |
