bullet Topic: Big Musical - All Females ?????
    Posted: 6/03/05 at 5:39pm

I am looking for a big musical (20+cast members) with an all female cast.

I won't do girls playing guys - unless the male part is a child (IE - a girl could play Peter Pan) or the 'male' part is a creature or a fantasy (IE - The Cheshire Cat in Alice In Wonderland).

Any Ideas?

I am thinking of Doing 'Alice in Wonderland' but I thought I could get some more ideas.  It's a high school production so I need to have lots of cast members.

Am I asking for the moon??

Thanks  Nyria

Oh - I should add - the last 3 plays we've done were:

Into the Woods

Annie

Wizard of Oz

(we did have guys but next year we have no dudes in drama )

"Alice in Concert" can be done with all women (and staged)
and it's a bit more exciting than the same old adaptations IMO.

Can you use ONE man LOL? "Nine" is all women with one
male.

Also, "Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the
Rainbow is Enuf" - though (obviously) it's an all-black cast.

The play "Ruthless" is hysterical - with great songs - and the
leading role is usually played by a man, but was originally
intended to be an all-female play. However, not that large a
cast. Only 9-10, I think.

"Quilters" is a wonderful all-female cast, but again, not 20 of
'em.

Have you thought about some of the big revue style shows?
The Jerry Herman on is specifically written for all-women - and
can have the cast enlarged to any number. But, there's no
reason why any o fthe Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Rogers and
Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, etc. revues couldn't be cast
with all women and enlarged casts.

I also seem to remember a musical about a girls' school -
anybody remember the title?

Is there something called "Life with Mother Superior" based on the book and the movie with Hayley Mills from the 60's? or did I dream that?

Also, what about trying a version of The Jungle Book?  I saw a great production of this by a high school last year and there really is no reason it couldn't be done with all girls.

The only one I know about a girls school is ?Saint Trinians? it?s not a musical, but you could add the music.

Or do a Pantomime, they are easy to do & loads of fun -

try http://www.funscripts.com/listofscripts.html , they can be downloaded.

Or George Rydell of amdrama.co.uk his scripts can be performed free in community theatre. He has various panto?s you can download, like the ?Christmas Toy Story & others.

You could always do one of the G&S scripts, like the ?Pirates of Penzance, which I believe is now in the public domain!

Sorry Nyria the Panto's & 'Pirates' would be no good, as they have too many blokes in them.

Just thinking about it! Any of the Panto?s could be done, because traditionally the Principle Boy {the Prince Charming] is always female & girls can play the rest of the parts. Except for the ?Dame?, who?s usually the ?Widow Twanky?, & is always played by an older bloke. Which might mean getting one of the students Dads or a male teacher involved.

As you have already done ?In to the woods? which is based on the Panto style fairy stories, you would possibly have a lot of the costumes ect.

Wow - lots of ideas already - woo hoo.

I might have a boy or 2 next year (if - God willing - one transfers in or something) I also sometimes get home schooled kids to come in and play a part.

I'm going to look at all of these (except "Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf" - because I teach in a small lily white town  so I don't think it would work)

Thanks everyone - keep 'em coming!

Do ?Grease? this is normally sold out, before you do the auditions! Or ?Rent? they are doing it here at a local community theatre group at the moment.

You could also try resurrecting a Vaudeville/ Old Time Music Hall variety show, with a thyme such as Dirty Dick?s, Jack the Ripper or even a Minstrel show.

Gaafa,

No offense, but how exactly would they pull off Grease, with all (but a few) females.  Grease has A LOT of male characters.
