Our theatre is putting on SINGIN IN THE RAIN next spring. I'm wavering between auditioning for Kathy and Lina. I know they added a solo for Lina in the stage version, but I'm a dancer first, and I think not being in the tap numbers might kill me. I love the show-stealing roles though, and I'm afraid Kathy might be too blah despite the dancing. Can anyone tell me what else they changed from the screen to the stage? |

I worked on the stage show years ago - I?m probably wrong! But I always thought the picture was adapted from the stage show? As in all of these flicks, they pad it out & change it about, only to suit &/or enhance the star. I think I have only watched bits & pieces of GK?s prancing about on the box & being as innate as he was in Brigadoon! All I can suggest Norma is try your local library & check out the libretto, I?m sure it will be different! Sorry I'm not much help but the Best of luck & chookas, if you get the part! |

Lina is a better part( for me anyway) she does get a song in the play and her bits are just better than Kathys. If your a dancer Kathy may be better for you, but if you are looking for laughs Lina is the way to go!!

Can you audition for both, and then show your preferences? Do you have a choice, or can you only audition for one? Or is it that you usually get the part you audition for in that company? |

When I audition people, the form has a space for them to indicate if
they are trying out for a specific part or parts or will take any part
offered. In a couple of cases, I have cast a person in a (larger)
part they did not indicate - I just ask them first. Ninety
percent of the people who audition indicate they will take any part.

Yes, we have general auditions and can also indicate if we'd prefer one part over another, but when I audition, I usually like to go in with a "look" that resembles the part I'd really like. I'd dye my hair blonde if I decide on Lina or do finger waves if I decide on Kathy. Makeup would be different too, and dress of course. I don't go in to auditions AS the character, but I think anything that helps the director picture you in the part helps. I couldn't find the libretto anywhere. My library only has the film script. |

Norma,
You've indicated in another post that you are a low alto. If this is the case I doubt you have much chance at Kathy. Hers is a mezzo/soprano role. K. |
