Our group would like to present an excerpt from The Beggar's Opera. I have the libretto, which has the full text & song lyrics, however I am having an extremely difficult time finding sheet music for the songs, or even anywhere to hear what the songs are supposed to sound like. I know that he used old folk songs, and changed the words, however, I am unable to find out what the songs are supposed to sound like. Has anyone out there done Beggar's Opera? Can anyone help? Is there a company that sells the rights for this show? This is extremely urgent! Thanks.

In the early 1950s or late 40s, Lawrence Olivier made a movie of the Beggar's Opera. I don't know if they used the original folk songs or new music was written for the movie, but it's a start.

A simple search on "beggars opera" brought up several interesting items, one of which is a music CD, being sold by WalMart. The particular arrangement and performance on the CD are undoubtedly copyrighted, but the melodies, if they are indeed the original English folk songs, must be in the public domain.
