I'll be directing my first show during the 2006 season ... a very small musical revue. I have some very specific ideas as to what I want regarding the choreography, but I'm not sure where the relationship between director and choregrapher comes into play. Keep in mind there is no dancing. Instead, these are choreographed moves by vocalists. I don't anticipate the choreographer being upset or anything (we're all volunteers), but I wanted to know what the proper protocol would typically be. Thanks guys ... |

I can't address this specific issue, but it's no different then the relationship between the director and anyone on the production staff. As a director you have to make sure you have a production staff you can "work with". With creative staff you need people who can share your ultimate vision for the show but who also bring thier own creative angle to it. If it's a good working relationship, most of the work they provide will be suitable to your vision, but when things are done that you don't like they will have to accept the critisim. As the director you get final say on all creative aspects of the show, but if you are constantly questioning the things that other person is doing then you may have picked or been given the wrong person for the job, (or your just an incurable control freak |

You just need to meet and communicate before hand to make sure you are on the same page. Usually it turns out to be a very creative venture.

Thank you both. I doubt that I'll have any problems at all ... just wanted to make sure I wasn't over-stepping if I felt the need to change something. I think I can take the musical numbers that I have definate blocking schemes in mind and work with the choreographer on those ... then she can pretty much do what she wants with the rest as long as it fits each individual's character. Great forum! |
