bullet Topic: Nunsense 2
    Posted: 3/27/05 at 9:51pm
I am in charge of doing props for Nunsense 2, has anyone ever
done it?? I have a make a pasta Maddonna, extra large knitting
needles with elastic on them to wrap around a veil, and a
sequined scapular, just to name a few. I need to get these done
fast, we have 3 weeks untill the show, and I have school during
the day (I'm a sophmore in HS) and rehearsal at night.
Thanks for reading, this is my 2d post, but I have been lurking
for awhile, and you all seem REALLY nice.

I stage managed Nunsense II a couple of years ago, and it was SO much fun!!  For the Pasta Maddona, we had a cardboard cutout that was about 3 feet tall.  On one side we had a copy of a saint's face, and then the pasta glued all around it, and praying hands.  On the other side, we had a copy of Maddona's face (we put some bright makeup on it), and then glued pasta all around, including large shells for "cone boobs."  The figures cut off at about the knees so that when you walked with it, it was close to life-sized.  I'll see if I can find some pics for you.  To help do this, the cast had a sleepover party where we watched movies and took turns hot-gluing pasta.  Keep the glue handy in case of repairs.

We didn't do the knitting needles, we just had a Chinese-style head band that looked like buns with the chopsticks in them.  It was near Halloween, so it was easy to find.  The actress played around with the veil and headband until it worked for her.  You may be able to do the same with some hair "chopsticks," a headband, and some glue.

As for the sequined scapular, we made an additional scapular, and then took some iron-on decorations such as horse shoes, cowboy hats, and boots that were already sequined.  Then we went around the edges of them with glitter fabric paint.  All the actress had to do was put this on over the rest of the habit.  She also wore decorated boots, sequined hat, and a bandana.

If you need anything else, just let me know!  I'll be happy to share!

Where did you find your roller skates for Leo's song, and where
did you find an accordion for Amnesia to play during the
polka?? Thanks.

When we needed an accordion for another show, I checked with our music department. (I work in a high school as well) The music director might have other connections you can use.

The other suggestion, depending on your budget, is to check out resale shops, salvation army, or thrift shops. Always great finds on odd props needed. Might be worth a look and might be cheaper than renting. Worth a look anyway.

Good Luck!

I'm trying to remember back...
I believe the skates belonged to one of the actresses.  You may be able to get a donation/rental from a local skating rink, though.
I believe we used a toy accordion in the show.  She made a few pretty awful sounds with it, that was all.

Could you all pray a special prayer for the Pope?? You all
know how many Pope refrences there are in this show, and we
are all terrified that he will die in the next 3.5 weeks!!

I'm sure it will feel inappropriate to have the references at such a grave time.  I had wondered what would happened to the Padre Polka since they directly reference his name.  I would like to know if your theater decides to alter the show in light of these circumstances.
Best of Luck to you!

You might want to try to contact Dan Goggin directly
either through his agent or through the play's
publisher.

Since he has written the entire "Nunsense"
franchise, I'm sure he's given some thought to the
matter and might have suggestions or alternatives
you could use in case the worst happens.

Best of luck to you all.

For the accordian - ask a local music shop if they will lend you one in exchange for their name in the program and free tickets. =)

Definitly try to contact Dan Goggin - I've found playwrights to be very helpful with things like this.

Also wanted to mention - when I did Nunsense I we had actual Nuns and Priests in the audience and they laughed more that the inuendos than anyone else   - I just thought that was interesting to share.
