Greetings All... We have always had an annual play at our tiny school (275 students k-12) The kids wanted more than just one show a year. So, this year we started a High School Drama Club. Our first meeting brought in 25 students. As usual, mostly the girls, but we got a fair number of boys too. We have a decent budget to work with. My dilemma is (or at least my first dilemma) how to pick the plays. I've got quite a few years in community theater, so I have seen and been in a lot of shows. But the problem is not having the outside input as far as director submissions and play reading lists. We hope to do a straight show in the fall and a big show, maybe a musical, in the spring. I'm sure with this group of kids and our small town audience base, keeping it "light" would be a good thing. So with all that said, I thought I would turn to you for suggestions. Any ideas?
Thanks.. Marty W |

A tough call for any group. I would think that maybe "light" isn't the word you want exactly. That will lead you to the same overdone (and mostly lame) plays that every high school does. Any degree of light or dark is fine as long as there is a good story and a message. And in the self pitching department, I have a short musical that I wrote in college that is too short for the traditional 2.5 hour saga that consitutes a full length musical and too long to be a one act. It runs a bit over an hour. I'd been thinking that high schools might be a good home for my musical. If you, or anyone else, would like to talk about it, email me at woozle27@msn.com

I just ran across a book called "Lets put on a Musical" I don't recall who wrote it. It had lists of musicals for different age groups, including high school, even younger I believe, If you are loking to find a play, it might just work. I found it at my local Borders. It wasn't waht I was looking for, but it might help you to look at it. Good luck!
