bullet Topic: Sheet music for an old song
    Posted: 3/21/05 at 1:07pm
I may be singing the song "someone to watch over me" for an audition, and i will be checking around music stores for the sheet music, but if i can't find it there, and am reluctant about ordering online, is there some other place where i can find it? Also, the audition is for a dinner theater that is doing two productions(annie get your gun and the music man) that i have a good chance of getting cast in. I'm in my midteens, and i would be going for one of the younger parts in the shows(annie's younger sister jessie or gracie shinn, perhaps) Does anyone have a song that would fit both those shows? I'm a soprano, btw. Thank you so much!

"Someone to Watch Over Me" was composed by
George Gershwin in 1926 for the Broadway show
"Oh, Kay!"

Not only was he a famous composer, but is also
considered to be a major historical figure.

Some larger public libraries have books containing
his scores or copies of his sheet music available in
their music departments.

They should allow you to photo-copy them for your
personal use.

Good luck!

Some directors of musicals like to hear a song from the show (others do not). Resolve that issue first.

Many music stores carry sheet music and will be willing to order you a copy of whatever song you would like (provided it is still in print).

Next, sing a song that you are most comfortable with. Also, since you are not trying out for the lead........you might consider a more upbeat song...........since you won't be singing any ballads in the shows anyway.

I would have to agree. I would use an upbeat song instead.  Gershwin is great for some of those as well.

Other composers:

Cole Porter

Hammerstien

etc.

I would use character songs/upbeat.

I think I may use " many a new day"(oklahoma), "you were meant for me"(?), or "lovely"(a funny thing...forum) any other suggestions?

I just wanted to say something about ordering sheet music on line. I was leery about it at first too. After trying it once, it is now my first choice. There are a number of really good sites. They often carry a number of different arrangements and lots of it is digital. Press a button and it comes out of your printer. www.sheetmusicplus.com, www.musicnotes.com, www.sunhawk.com I have used all of these sites with great success. I have found if one site doesn't carry what I am looking for, one of the other two sites usually does. It has certainly saved me from running all over town looking for sheet music.

good for you.  by the way, if it comes up again, that you need music for an audition...you can be bold...and ask the director you are working for, what he/she might think is good for you to audition with for future gigs.
