I'm a recent college graduate, 23, and fairly new to the Boston area. Now that I'm in the "real world," I need a hobby that I'm passionate about to contrast my mundane cubicle life. I would love to get involved with community theatre. I don't have a lot of experience, but I've loved singing and dancing throughout my life. As for the minimal experience that I do have...I've been on stage in a small community theatre production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat (but I was only 8 at the time!), I played Winifred in Once Upon a Mattress during high school, I worked as a dance teacher for 2 summers at a sleep-away camp in Maine, and last summer I was the drama department's choreographer/assistant director for their production of Annie. That's about it. Does anyone out there know of any welcoming groups in the Boston area? I've already contacted a theatre and volunteered to help them build their set this weekend. I figured that would be a good way to inch my way into the community theatre scene. Does anyone know of any specific places that could use an enthusiastic and reliable gal like myself? Please post a response or email me at: KateTheBabysitter@yahoo.com Thanks!! |

Kate, If you walk in and offer to work on a set for a group you have never met, you will endear yourself to them immediately! Offer to sew some costumes and they will believe there is a Santa Claus and he brought Christmas early this year. Really, I think you have come up with the best plan to elbow your way into a community theatre group all by yourself! Good luck and if they don't appreciate you there, move to Iowa where we can use people like you! |

Kate, I'm partial to the Walpole Footlighters. They're about to do "Proof"--auditions are the 16th & 17th. Check out their site at www.footlighters.com ..js.. |

Kate, check out http://www.netheater411.com, they have lots of info and links to area community theatre. I'm somewhat partial to Arlington Friends of the Drama (http://www.afdtheatre.org/). And Vokes Players (which is not at vokesplayers.org, by the way) is a wonderful group, too (http://www.members.aol.com/vokesplays/index.html). And if you're a dancer, I'd definitely look at Walpole - they still need female dancer/singers for "Pal Joey" (http://www.footlighters.com/auditions/index.html). And I agree with Eva B - if you show up willing to work on a set or sew costumes or anything like that - you're golden! If you want to, feel free to e-mail me at: mailto: mailto: KgrK13@excite.com |
