bullet Topic: Has anyone done these plays?
    Posted: 2/05/05 at 10:43am
Hi, We are a community theatre in a youngish senior community in southern Arizona. Our first play (last year) was a melodrama and very successful. This year we are doing Rumors, by Neil Simon and it is going to be terrific. Most of the tickets for the four nights are sold our already.

We are picking the play for next year (we have to choose early because many of our residents leave for the summer and at our age, it takes a while to remember lines). We have narrowed it down to four and wondered if anyone had done any of these plays.

...Meanwhile Back on the Couch by Jack Sharkey
Take a Number Darling by Jack Sharkey
Blythe Spirit by Noel Coward
But Why Bump off Barnaby by Rick Abbott

We like to have 8-12 in our cast.
Thanks for your help.

Instead of Noel Coward's BLYTHE SPIRIT, his play EASY VIRTUE might be better for the quantity of roles in it.  I saw it in the West End a few years ago.

Thank you for your suggestion, but in the French catalogue it list that play as for Advanced groups which we aren't yet.

It does look like a great play though.

I don't know Why Bump Off Barnaby, but, I have worked with 2 other Rick Abbot plays...Play On! and June Groom. Both were very silly, farce type stuff that went over very well with the audience. Play On! was especially fun to work with...it is about theater.

Blythe Spirit is a great show...some tech challenges as I remember.

Good Luck,

BLITHE SPIRIT was our most successful play in our 33 year history.  Yes, there are some tech challenges, but nothing insurmountable. I highly recommend it.

Hi Barb,

Have you considered one of the "Farndale Avenue..." series; say "The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of Macbeth".  (Yes, that's the full title!).  They lampoon amateur theatre.  With clever sets and good timing, they can be hilariuous.

They can be found fairly easily on the Internet, because of their fairly unique titles (as you can see).

Cheers from Oz,

Russell
