I am directing a show in which a character has a broken leg. The show takes place in 1959 so I need a basic plaster cast. Any ideas on where to buy, make, or rent one?

Don't be shy about asking an actual, local doctor to outfit your actor with a genuine plaster cast. There might be one who'd love the opportunity to contribute to the theater (or be compensated for the use of their materials only). The finished cast -- once dry -- can then be removed with a surgical saw, splitting it down each side. For performances, white duct tape (or other cloth tape) can be used to hide the seams and hold the cast together.

Or you can use rigid wrap to "make a cast". It's is the same plaster cloth used to make real casts. You can make it in advance, cut it in an inconspicious place and reassemble each performance.
