I am needing to set up some sandbags, but can't have them be heavy. I have purchased some burlap bags, and need to find something to fill them with that 1) Makes them look like they are full of sand, 2) Is inexpensive, and 3) Is not heavy.
I dont want them to look lumpy, or light, as this will ruin the illusion of them being sand... Any ideas will be appreciated- Thanks, Bruce |

Without knowing specifically how large they are or how they will be used this may or may not meet your needs. First, fill the bag 1/5th to 1/4th full of dried beans, or dry sand, or rice to allow the bottom to conform to a surface as sand bags do. Fill the rest of the way with either loose fiberfill, loose insulation (like you find blown into attics), or even old, stale pop corn! (Air popped is best). If you place this all inside a PAPER bag (that has been wrinkled and wadded enough to no longer be stiff) and then inside your burlap bag the lumpiness will be minimized. It will have enough mass to give the illusion of "heavy," but it will be substantially lighter.

Thanks Bill,
I ended up using sand, even though i didn't want to... But i needed to stack the bags and couldn't find any other way. I just used less bags than i had originally wanted. But I did like your suggestions. |

In case this ever comes up again for anyone in the future.
Just head over to Walmart and get some Bean Bag filling. |

If you want to actually use sand - sandbox sand is relatively cheap. And I've found that using zippered nylon pillow cases help protect against leaking.
