We don?t use them here, beyond the Board/Committee being the Producer as such! However In the rare cases where one is appointed, in normal circumstances they are an elected member of the management committee/board. Who?s brief is to be the liaison & representative to or of the production, acting as the main conduit between both. In a true sense the producer ?s job is to, procure the sand & it?s delivery, so as to allow the actors to play in the sand pit. Chookas |

We do not have a job description but I produce most of our productions. The Producer is in overall charge of the production and as such everyone works for him/her including the Director. The Director is responsible for the performance on stage including sets, costumes, casting, props, etc. The Producer takes care of everything else - dealing with the venue, promotion, publicity, playbill, front of house, working with the Director to find all the support staff, keeping track of the budget, and so on. In short, if it doesn't happen on stage it is the Producer's responsibility. I see a large part of my job as reducing the workload on the Director by helping anywhere I can. Every production has glitches and, if the Director asks, I step in to get things back on track while the Director keeps focused on the performance. Since the ultimate responsibility for the success of the production is mine, I only work with Directors I have confidence in. I attend occasional rehearsals to see how things are going. I also attend a run through a couple of weeks before opening and take notes of areas in the play that don't work for me to share with the Director. Most Directors have areas where they are not as strong as other areas and I keep an eye on those areas and work with them to make sure there are no obvious shortfalls in the production. |
