We're doing Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives which requires a mountain climber's axe to be sticking out of the actor's head. Any advice on how to make a realistic looking mountain climber's axe that's light enough to stay on the actor for the duration of the short play? We're thinking of attaching it to the wig. Thank you in advance!

That's what we did when we did the show. We made the axe handle out of styrofoam and the tip of the axe that was still showing was made from foam board. I don't remember for sure how we attached it to the wig, but it worked well.

When we did it, we had a hard time keeping the axe on his head.
We ended up making a head band sort of affair, so that it clamped firmly on his head. Then the costumer used wig hair that matched the actor's to cover the headband, so that all that showed was the styrofoam handle and rubber blade that partially showed. It really worked. |
