Topic: Prop Help! Man of La Mancha

This is my first time as prop master and I've got my work cut out for me with Man of La Mancha.

I'm currently sweating about creating the mirror shields, and the sword/twisted sword. They seem too costly to rent so I'd like to try to make them.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

With the shields you could get some 'shrink mirror' from a theatre lighting supplier;-Rosco US : Technotes : Designer : Rosco Shrink Mirror

it is safer & easy to apply. or use some stick on mirror vynil, which comes in rolls from a hardware shop. Also ther is no need to have the shields as a full mirror, theycan be just pieces of mirror arranged on the shields. This would be in keeping with the fact, that supposedly all of the props are kept in Sancho's prop basket.

The twisted & straight sword were made up by a local metal work shop, for a few comps. [the real cost was about $50]. He also made up Quoxites brest plate armour as well. [I also have made up the breast plate out of cardboard, wetting it into shape. Painting it & adding short sprays of rust colour, from an aerosol can.]

With the lance we bought two household wooden curtain poles & dressed them up, using one as the broken lance.

With the 'Golden Helmet' we used a cheap metal lamp shade & pop riverted a steel bowel, over the the light fitting hole. Cutting out the chin scolop & with Aldonsas dish cloth it sat well on the head.

Sorry...I'm so new at this..but did you buy costume shields then and just dress them up? Or did you make them? I'm having trouble figuring out what I should spend money on and what I should make!!

G'day Munes & should have welcomed byou nto the forum!

I have done this musical play about 3 times. With the ameatre shows the shields have been just plywood shaped with arm straps for them to hold. Each time they have been only a small short shield, which makes them easier held on one arm, they have both been round & conventional shield shape. Fairly easy to make & the 'warm props' to handle, bringing them into view from behind thier backs.

All the other props like plates, cups & whatever, we got wooden ones from 'Charity shops' very cheaply, along with most of the costumes.
