I am considering doing Into The Woods in 2009-2010 with my middle school theatre club....either the Junior version or an abbreviated version of the full score.  Any input/suggestions as to props/scenery and where to find a "Milky White?"

Thanks :)

I saw a HS version where Milky White was played upright and the cow costume was simply a white coverall type thing with cow spots and a tail, and a white hood with ears.  Pretty simply made.  No mask or anything, just the actor's face.  Worked just fine.  Let the kid have his/her moment and don't cover his face with a fake head.  Let Mom and Grandma get a good picture. Smile

Keep the scenery simple, small and portable.  It's easier to put the Dads to work if they can do a lot of it at home in their garage.

Since Into the woods is an MTI show, you can check the community rentals section of their web site: www.mtishowspace.com - it lists rentals for all of their shows.

Hello Dana,
I thought, perhaps, Mr. Lowell was you!
I forgot to mention in my previous post that the community rentals pages with MTI Show Space is a community service of theirs. They are not the renters; they just provide the information for people who are looking for set, props and costumes for their catalog of shows. They have the liscensing rights to many popular musicals.

I just wish some of the other liscence companies (like Tams Whitmark and Rodgers and Hammmerstin) also had this service available on their web sites. I think more community theaters would be consider their shows if they had the information on where to rent the scenery, costumes and props.

Our milky white was just a big paper mache and chicken wire prop... on wheeled base... It was hollowed at the mouth to allow for the "feeding"

Hi Tammy, we did INTO THE WOODS about 15 years ago.  But the castle tower unit survives today.  It's at the community theatre rental warehouse here in Greensboro.  I used it again just last year in a production of "Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged".  Here's a picture:  http://www.lowell.to/Studio/IMG_4102.JPG

It's a rather large piece, so you wouldn't want to ship it a long way.  Where are you located?

 Hi Dana,
Thanks for the picture....the tower is beautiful!  Mind telling me how you constructed it?  I remember speaking to you a few years ago about backdrops for my production of The King and I...you were doing Seussical at the time. Hope all is well with you!

The tower has a 2"x4" lumber frame and is rapped in 1/4" flexible luaun panelling.  It was built many years ago by David Bell, who is the local Community Theatre lighting designer of note.  The flexible style luaun panelling is very, VERY expensive.  There is a platform inside the tower about 4 feet off the ground and a long piece of fraid hemp rope to act as "Rapunsel's hair".  For this recent production, I had the tower repainted by the best mural artist in the region, Dale Johnson, (who in his day was a Outdoor Drama actor/fight choreographer at places like "Tecomseh").  But as I mentioned, the tower, which is for rent from our local theatrical warehouse, is very large and rather heavy.

Yes, my production of Seussical went really well.  I sold all the foam props, as detail in another forum thread.  But I have no idea where the props ended up after changing hands several times.

At the moment I am building the set for Thoroughly Modern Millie, which opens in 3 weeks.  It's a traditional drop & wagon set, but still a lot of work...

I hope your production of King and I went well.  Have you posted photos of it somewhere?  -Dana

By the end of November 2009, Cobalt Studios will be increasing our backdrop rental inventory with several new backdrops that are appropriate for Thoroughly Modern Millie, Suessical and other popular musicals. Be sure to check our web sit in the next few weeks for updates. Be sure to check out our frequent renters program and non profit discounts.
