i have decided to put on a play and try to involve as many people as possible. i want it to be an all high school ran and produced performance, so the show can't be too diffucult. since it is the first play i am doing on my own i want to involve as many people as possible so there is a lot of interest. i have talked to a few people and their advice was to do a musical because the interest would be heightened. i agree but since i have decided it would be a high school production i dont want to bring in a choreagrapher or rely on cheerleader based moves. would it make sense to have a couple people who take dance classesto choreograph it?do you know of any musical that is rather small casted and yet has no huge dance numbers?? if not, any ideas for a fun play??? i'm in desperate need of help!! in every way- if you just have advice please post!!thank you

We just got through the first three performances of a new original musical with a cast of 40 and crew of 10, plus a 17 piece pit orchestra. It's a zoo backstage. You do NOT want to have this large a cast/crew for your first play unless you have several people to manage them. We can barely keep the teens in line, let alone the adults and children. I would suggest a smaller cast if you are using teens. They have tons of enthusiasm but not much discipline. We did not have a choreographer and our dance scenes are only just adequate - could be much better. You will need a vocal coach if you do a musical - do you have a drama or music teacher to help? Guys and Dolls is always a popular high school production as is Grease. Good luck! |

Also, I'd recommend a musical called REDHEADS I can't remember if there are any large dance #'s, but you could easily do the show with a cast of 20-25. Question: Does the school you're doing the show at have a good choral program? That could make all the difference. |

Just a note on the choreographer. I am so much happier when I have a choreographer. If there is anyway you can manage it. Do it. Go talk to a local dance studio, and see if they will swap ad space in your program for time to work with you. My choreographer always get a couple of new students each time she does a show, and says it is worth time she puts into it. After she choreographs she appoints dance captains for most of the rehearsals. Then she just shows up a couple of times more to make sure everything is going well. It works for me.
